Why Dowlatabad Garden?

The Dowlatabad Garden is one of the oldest gardens in the city of Yazd. The unique and interesting thing about it is the existence of a 33.8-meter long Windcatcher on the garden mansion, the world's tallest Windcatcher. The garden is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is considered one of the most valuable attractions in Iran. The garden dates back to the late afshar period when Mohammad Taqi Khan Bafqi, a member of the Yazd dynasty, began to build this beautiful garden.

He initially planned to irrigate the trees and flowers of the garden before he built different parts of the garden, so he transferred the water from Mehriz to the garden's place in Yazd by digging a 65-kilometer long aqueduct.

This aqueduct is more than 200 years old and has been made up of five strands of aqueducts. The origin of the qanat is Mehriz highlands, which irrigated parts of the Mehriz ground along its 65-kilometer route and launched several water-mills. But the aqueduct is no longer used to irrigate the garden and is used instead of a semi-deep well adjacent to it.

Dowlatabad Garden Design is one of the most original and most innovative Iranian garden designs. At the time of Muhammad Taqi Khan, the garden reached the street from the north to the street that had many trees, so that the trees prevented the view from outside into the garden. For this reason, the street was also called "a thousand trees", which was 4 to 5 meters width and more than 20 kilometers long and went to Rahim Abad.

The Dowlatabad garden, with an area of about 70,000 square meters, has many buildings, ponds and waterfronts, with gardens of pomegranate and grapes in the space between them, and many beautiful arboreal beads.

Dowlatabad Garden is considered as a state-run residence and consists of two parts:

In terms of structure, the Dowlatabad Garden can be considered a garden-yard, and it is similar to the Garden of Narenjest Qavam and the Haftanan Garden in Shiraz because of the garden space in the middle and the buildings around the garden.

Hashti building (Summer Windcatcher) of Dowlatabad Garden

The most important building of the garden is the Hashti mansion, which is at the end of the main axis of the garden and is connected to the southern wall. The building forms the main building of the garden and combines the flow of air and water into the most beautiful shape. In this building, the wind and water are integrated into the pools and transfer the cool air from the underfloor to the Shahneshin and the halls. Due to this cool air, the summer building or summer Windcatcher is also called.

The Hashti is a two-story building with an octagonal shape, and has three marble baskets, a chamber, a vestibule, and two sliding pillows.

The ceiling of this part has a beautiful artwork that is hand-crafted by Professor Haji Ali Akbar Akhund, and is very skilful with gypsum wire and gypsum plaster. The use of arched, colored glasses and dance of sunlight and moonlight gives them more beauty to this mansion.

On the upper floor of the mansion, there is a hall and porch and it allows you to watch the beautiful views of the garden.

Windcatcher of Dowlatabad Garden

The Windcatcher of Dowlatabad Garden is located on the Hashti building and is one of the most prominent symbols of the garden, which is 33.8 meters tallest in the world.

This winding is octagonal and in the form of a prism and a pond is located below it. This structure makes it possible for the wind turbine to easily and quickly guide it to the bottom when the wind is blowing in any direction. The wind reaches the surface of the pond and cools the air into the stream. This blend of wind and cooler air below the winding with the Shahneshin and the halls, and keeps the coolers in the building cool today.

One of the beauty of this garden is the symmetry used in architecture, part of its attraction due to the same designations of the design, in which all the designs are applied with a certain skill in proportion.

The main door of this garden is located on the streets of Shahid Rajaee Shahr, Yazd, and another door located at Dowlatabad Boulevard, has no entrance to the public and is almost under repair and therefore the traffic is from the main gate of the garden.
